Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa hiked

CHENNAI: Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa on Saturday hiked daily employment wages under the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Scheme ( MGNREG) by Rs 13. The daily wages of the workers has been increased from Rs 119 to Rs 132 with immediate effect.

With this move, more than 25 lakh labourers, who are working under central government-sponsored scheme in Tamil Nadu, will be benefited, an official release from the state government said.

The MNREGA Act 2005 provides enhancement of livelihood security, giving at least 100 days of guaranteed wage employment in every financial year to every household, whose adult members volunteer to do unskilled manual work.

The MNREGS stipulates that works must be targeted towards a set of specific rural development activities such as water conservation and harvesting, afforestation, rural connectivity, flood control and protection such as construction and repair of river and lake embankments.

The release added that the state government is effectively implementing the MNREGS in all the districts.
